Printed check signed ("A. Lincoln"), drawn on the Springfield Marine & Fire Insurance Company, Springfield, 1 February 1860, accomplished by Lincoln in favor of Wallace & Bailhache for $5, printed in blue ink on paper (2 1/2 x 7 5/8 in.; 66 x 192 mm) by Richards & Smith, marine vignette at left border; neat cancellation slits.

William Wallace and William Henry Bailhache were political allies of Lincoln. Bailhache was one of the publishers of the Illinois State Journal, which closely covered the Lincoln-Douglas debates. Bailhache also printed pamphlet editions of several of Lincoln's addresses, including the Cooper Union speech.
