Catalogue Note

This fine vertical photograph depicts the artist in dark jacket and bow-tie, leaning on his elbow in front of a window.  As Rodney Engen has pointed out, "... the puckish young Beardsley understood self-promotion and chose the vehicles of Victorian printing and publishing to further his career. ... Photography too played a fascinating role in this process, from the reproduction of his delicate drawings for publication to the more personal portrait photographs he autographed and presented to admirers and patrons."
