Catalogue Note

Publisher's presentation from Blanche Knopf of the first American edition "From Blanche Knopf" in Chandler's hand on front blank.

Knopf recognizes kindred spirits Chandler's novels were first issued in France in 1947 as numbers in the  Serie Noire  imprint (see lots 125 and 126)  placing him among a roster that  included  "hard-boiled" Americans like David Goodis, Cain, Hammett and Chandler. The bleak themes and moral ambivalence on display paralleled the Existentialists and Camus was particularly interested, especially by Chandler.   Mrs. Knopf obviously thought the interest might be reciprocal, thus her presentation of The Stranger to him.
