Woodcut printer's device on title, engraved allegorical text illustration, 72 engraved maps (6 folding) as text illustrations; somewhat browned, folding maps mended along folds, Europe map mended in lower portion of fold with minor loss in Mediterranean and small portion of printed border supplied in penwork, upper right corner of Italy map mended with minor loss of printed border supplied in penwork, some marginal dampstains, small mended tear in lower margin of last map without loss. 18th-century mottled calf, gold-stamped title label on spine (in Spanish), in a blue cloth drop-box; lower half of spine renewed.

Catalogue Note

First French edition of this pocket-size atlas, first appearing in Dutch in 1577. The reduced size Theatrum was initiated by the engraver Philip Galle and the poet Pieter Heyns, both friends of Ortelius. The format proved to be a best seller.
