Catalogue Note

First edition, published as double issue 22/23 of Der Jüngste Tag and dated 1916 on the front cover. Die Verwandlung ("The Metamorphosis") is one of the few works published during Kafka's lifetime. Wanting to keep open the various interpretations of Gregor Samsa's transformation, Kafka has strong views on any cover image, writing to publisher Kurt Wolff,   "The insect itself must not be illustrated by a drawing. It cannot be shown at all, not even from a distance."
