Catalogue Note

George du Maurier (1834–1896) the French-born British cartoonist and author, was known for his cartoons in Punch and his gothic-horror novel Trilby. His work concentrated on unexceptional people in exceptional circumstances or fantastic encounters. In the present sequence, Tom Noddy suffers from a Christmastime nightmare brought on by cold mince pies for supper, but the underlying theme is a dark fantasy of the power of Time. The drawings appeared in Punch's Almanack for 1892.
