Catalogue Note

On the death of his brother Sidney Smith Lee, Robert E. Lee writes a letter of condolence to his nephew Fitzhugh. "Your telegram of yesterday announcing the great affliction that has befallen us, reached me by mail this mnt. The Eastern train has already passed Goshen 22 miles from me. There is no possibility of my being with you this evng., to assist in the performance of the last sad rites to my dear, dear brother. Tomorrow I will go to mingle my tears with yours, your dear Mother's, & brothers. May God have mercy on us all!"
