Catalogue Note
"There is no greater satisfaction, than to add, however little, to the general stock of knowledge."
Darwin responds at some length to a young Edward Bok who had requested a few lines of his hand-writing, relating "as a young boy I collected lots of things and I well remember how much pleasure each new thing gave me, so that I am glad to add to your collection." Later in the letter Darwin states that "My collections led me to turn to science, and it is my hope that it may have the same effect on you." With an autograph note signed twice ("Charles Darwin / From your well wisher") and dated 15 April, 1882, a month before his death at Beckenham, Kent.
