2 mid-nineteenth-century Whaling journals, accompanied by 2 school exercise manuscripts of similar date, comprising:
Journal of the ship Ontario, plying the Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic oceans, 135 pages (15 1/4 x 9 5/8 in.; 387 x 245 mm), written in several hands, regular entries spanning 9 November 1845 through 20 April 1849, containing weather reports, positions of latitude and longitude, and reports of sightings and taking of whales, with 13 whale drawings, together with several pages at the end of general accounts from the voyage; a few pages torn out from front, some other pages detached, a little worming at front, some dampstaining throughout. Contemporary calf-bacled marbled boards; very worn.
Journal of the ship Marcus, plying the Pacific and Altantic oceans,97 pages (9 3/4 x 8 1/8 in.; 249 x 207 mm), written in a single hand, title-page ("Wisdoms an ornament | Andrew Halsey") and regular entries spanning 23 July 1828 through 20 May 1829, containing weather reports, positions of latitude and longitude, and reports of sightings and taking of whales, with 14 whale fluke drawings, together with a terminal page of general accounting of the voyage; some light dampstaining at front, single womhole at front, short wormtrail at back. Stab-sewn into canvas binding.
Accompanied by 2 other manuscript journals, including Andrew Halsey's school exercise book, Southampton, 1806, 234 pages (12 5/8 x 7 1/2 in.; 322 x 192 mm), mostly arithmetic and mathematical exercises and drills, but with a good section on surveying and several pages of calligraphy exercises; some marginal fraying, especially at lower fore-edge, a bit of dampstaining, some minor worming at end. Limp boards; worn.
