Catalogue Note

A scarce relic from the first official meeting of Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. The Newfoundland conference, held aboard the USS Augusta, was intended to explore the ways in which the United States could take a more active role in supporting the British in their war against Germany. Churchill fell short of his goal of convincing Roosevelt to declare war on the Axis powers, and the principal result of the conference was the Atlantic Charter, issued on 14 August, which defined the Allies' vision of the world "after the final destruction of the Nazi tyranny."

The menu is also signed by Sumner Welles, Under Secretary of State; Admiral Harold R. Stark, Chief of U.S. Naval Operations; General George C. Marshall, Chief of Staff; Admiral Ernest J. King, Commander, Atlantic Fleet; Major General Henry H. Arnold, Chief of Air Corps; Harry L. Hopkins; Averill Harriman; Sir Alexander G. M. Cadogan, Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs; Admiral Sir Alfred D. P. R. Pound, Chief of the British Naval Staff; General Sir John G. Dill, Chief of the Imperial General Staff; British Air Chief Marshall Sir Wilfrid R. Marshal, Vice Chief of the British Air Staff; and Lord Cherwell.

Rare: only a few menus would have been printed for this dinner, and even fewer signed; only one signed copy of the menu appears in the auction records since at least 1975. The present copy is accompanied by a second, unsigned copy of the menu; a dinner menu for the Commander-in-Chief's Mess for 7 August 1941; and 11 official photographs of participants in the conference.
