Catalogue Note
Archibald Gracie (1755-1829), vice-president of the Chamber of Commerce and first president of the Bank of the United States (his mansion now houses New York's mayors), retained Hamilton as his attorney in the case of Archibald Gracie vs. the United Insurance Company involving the ship Dauphin. The present letter is Hamilton's report to Gracie on his evaluation of the case, outlining the conditions under which it could be considered a total versus a partial loss.
