Catalogue Note
"I love horses, horseracing and betting on horses" (quoted in Parsons).
Frank Stella's fame in the world of art is legendary; less known is his passion for horses, racing, and breeding. The artist breeds his own race horses at his ranch in Connecticut. In 1978 he attended the prestigious Keeneland Thoroughbred auctions with his friend and advisor Harold Snowden. Snowden was a well-known Kentucky owner, breeder, and a former director of the Kentucky Racing Commission.
A catalogue was published for the November and January sales and houseguest Stella spent his evenings drawing and painting on a small scale, using the catalogues as an improvised resource. The painted catalogues were presented to the artist's host. Although Stella was reticent to sign the volumes, Snowden insisted by playfully suggesting that he may not advise the artist at future sales. Stella agreed to sign and dedicate the volumes to Snowden.
