Overall the condition of the bronze is very good with dirt and wear to the patina consistent with age and handling. There are a number of small lacunae in the bronze from the casting process, including to the lion's back and in the crevices of the mane. There are a number of round casting plugs, particularly in the proper left side of the lion. There is a slightly larger trapezoid shaped casting plug in the proper left thigh. The paws are cast hollow on the underside.

This lion compares closely with South German ultilitarian bronzes dating to the 17th century, particularly in the treatment of the eyebrows and whiskers; see, for example, the bronze finial sold in these rooms on 5th December 2007, lot 39.
