Provenance

purportedly found in a river bed near Canterbury;

Condition

Overall the condition of the gold is very good. There is minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age, including a number of minor nicks and scratches. There are two larger nicks to the plaited section of the ring. There is a slight stable fissure at one end of the flatter part of the ring where it joints with the plaited section.

Catalogue Note

Only a few rings of this type -characterised by two twisted wires beaten together at the underside- are known. A particularly close comparison was found in Devon and was sold in these rooms on 10 July 1990, lot 201 for £3,200. Three further examples are illustrated by Oman (op.cit.).
