Description

  • St Margaret and St Catherine
  • gilt and polychromed limewood

Condition

Overall te condition of the wood is good. There is wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. There are losses to the polychromy throughout. The wood has stable splitting in several locations consistent with material including St Margaret's face and shoulders. Both figures have separately carved sections to either side of which the joints are visible. Both figures have worming to the surface. The bases are carved separately. Both hands of St Margaret are lost, the tip of the proper right foot is lost and there are minor losses to the coronet. There are probable losses to the reverse of the proper left shoulder. There are a number of stable holes and plugs to the reverse. There are a few small holes to the front, including to the blue drapery on the proper left. St Catherine has losses throughout including the proper right hand, fingers of the proper left hand and to the coronet the wheel, to the tip of the proper right foot, to the gold drapery at the chest, and to the edges of the base. There is a repair to the reverse on the proper right side, pegs are visible. There are a number of small holes and plugs visible to the reverse, particularly at the sides.
