Catalogue Note
Dalou was fascinated with the subject of the female nude and worked and re-worked a series of models depicting nudes in guises typical of the genre, such as before and after the bath, towelling themselves standing bending down or seated, taken by surprise or removing their stockings. They were more intimate sculptures than his studies of labourers and were never exhibited publicly at the Salon.
From 1907, the Hébrard foundry was permitted to cast some of Dalou's works in editions of ten. A bronze cast of Femme nue s'essuyant le pied numbered C.6 was sold at Sotheby's New York, 23rd October 1995, Lot 200 and can be identified with the present model. The Petit Palais conserves the original terracotta model (inv.no.343).
