Catalogue Note
This fine wax is a preparatory sketch for Guillaume's Napoléon Ier à cheval en tenue militaire, of which the plaster is in the Musée d'Orsay [inv. no. RF 1731]. Guillaume created two compositions of Napoleon on horseback, the present one, in which the Emperor wears his iconic hat, and a second in which he is presented in the garb of a Roman general.
