Overall the condition of the marble is good. There is some yellowing of the marble to the end of one lock of hair and the big toe of the proper right foot, where ther may have been restoration. There are some chips to the hair and some general minor wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. There is a naturally occuring vein to the proper right cheek.

Catalogue Note

Suzanne surprise was one of Carpeaux's final works. The original plaster model, which featured in the 1913 Carpeaux sale, is signed and dated 1872. The model belongs to the series of expressive, almost wind-swept, figures and groups by the sculptor which include the Genie de la Danse, La Ville de Valenciennes défendant la patrie and Frère et soeurSuzanne surprise was edited by the atelier Carpeaux in terracotta, bronze and marble. According to Poletti and Richarme it appears not to have been given a posthumous edition by Susse. The number of models produced in all three materials was limited. Versions in marble are particularly rare.
