Condition

Original canvas. There are strokes of retouching visible under ultraviolet light, notably in an approx 6 by 6cm area to the lower right of his head and 5 by 5cm area to the upper right, and at the extreme edges, with faint stretcher marks and hairline craquelure, visible notably in his face. There are two small patches on the reverse: one in the lower part, and one on the reverse of the upper left. The overall appearance of this work is good.

Catalogue Note

Raimundo de Madrazo and Eduardo de Zamacois both moved to Paris in 1860, where they became great friends and found artistic success. Zamacois also appears in La Vicaria, the masterpiece by Raimundo's brother-in-law Mariano Fortuny.
