Catalogue Note

Ladies in the Sunshine was painted at Rügen, on the Baltic sea in Germany, where Gude stayed during the summers of 1882 and 1883.

Although known primarily for his Nordic pure landscapes, by the 1880s Gude was increasingly painting figures, and turning from dramatic mountain scenery to coastal subjects. The present work is a particularly fine example, as Gude deploys his skill in capturing light and shade in a Summer's day at the seaside, in a scene which is more intimate than his sweeping landscapes.
