Catalogue Note
Palliser's oil on canvas portrait of Greene is dated 1981-1983 and hangs in the National Portrait Gallery. The present work was presumably a preparatory piece. It was published in the exhibition catalogue to accompany the artist's 1981 Galleria Fontanella Borghese exhibition in Rome.
Greene contributed 'A Personal Impression' to the catalogue which noted "I have the impression that a portrait by him will seldom be merely a portrait - it will be a painting which contains a portrait" (a copy of the catalogue is included in lot 87).
