  • Autograph manuscript fair copy of his poem, 'England to Free Men'
  • ink on paper
24 lines in three eight-line stanzas, signed at the foot, one page, small folio, lightly sunned, ink slightly smudged

Catalogue Note

An attractive manuscript copy of Galsworthy's widely anthologised poem, written on the eve of the adoption of conscription in the midst of World War I, and which served, like Kipling's 'If', as a patriotic call to arms. This manuscript contains a number of textual variants from the printed version, first published in The Westminster Gazette, most significantly a rhythmically pleasing rearrangement of the twelfth line.
