Catalogue Note
An inscribed presentation copy of Conrad's greatest commercial success.
The publication history of Chance is notoriously complicated: a "domestic, pre-publication issue" of the first English edition, together with Canadian and Colonial issues, appeared in 1913; the "published" English edition in 1914. According to William Cagle's unpublished bibliography there was also a pre-publication American issue, before the main edition (as here) appeared in the spring of 1914. The novel had previously been serialized in The New York Herald from 21 January to 30 June 1912.
