8vo, 3 volumes, first edition, one of 1,000 copies (of which 250 quires and 33 copies were remaindered in 1882), original red diagonal-fine-ribbed cloth (Purdy's primary binding), upper covers with pictorial design in black (encampment and mill, from a drawing by the author) and lettered in black, spines gilt and black with design of standard, sword and bugle, pale yellow endpapers, each volume preserved in quarter morocco slipcases, spines slightly creased and darkened, some rubbing to extremities, some slight staining to covers, boxes worn and partially split
