Catalogue Note
A fine family presentation copy. Shortly after Charles Darwin died in 1882 the family chose his third son Francis as the best editor for his letters. He was well qualified for at least two reasons, having had a good working relationship with his father, collaborating on experiments at Down after 1874, and also being the one with the most literary talent.
Hyacinth Hooker (née Jardine, 1842-1921) was the botanist and explorer's second wife, whom he married in 1876. They had two sons.
