Catalogue Note

The title of the portrait of Shannon and Ricketts is a reference to Chilham Castle in Kent. The artists advised the owner, Sir Edmund Davis, and also lived on the estate. Hart-Davis notes 'The New Helen' as 'an early drawing'.
