Catalogue Note

A fine association.  Alec Guinness's portrayal of the spymaster George Smiley -- indisputably John le Carré's greatest fictional creation -- in the television adaptations of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1979) and Smiley's People (1981) won him universal acclaim, and was the great success of the actor's late career. David Cornwell ("John le Carré") was extremely effusive in his praise of Guinness's portrayal, being impressed enough to allow it to influence his characterisation in the later novels in the series. The two became good friends.

Fellow actors who have signed Guinness's copy of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy include Ian Richardson, Anthony Bate, Warren Clarke, Michael Joyston, Pauline Letts, Hywel Bennett, Marjorie Hogan, Mandy Cuthbert, Bernie Austin, John Hooper, Melville Freedman, Ian Bannen and many others.
