Catalogue Note
An inscribed presentation copy of the first book by England's finest nature poet, here in the fourth edition. The recipient is Jane Mossop, sister of the Rev. Mossop of Helpston, Clare's friend and parish clergyman, one of the two trustees of the young poet's income (the other being John Taylor, his publisher). Both Jane and her brother are known to have shown considerable support and kindness to Clare and his family. Two years later Clare was committed to Northampton General Lunatic Asylum, living there until his death in May 1864.
