Catalogue Note

Beatrix Potter's 1893 Christmas design sent to Elinor and Elizabeth Lupton. The Lupton sisters' great aunt was Beatrix Potter's grandmother and the artist is known to have sent Christmas designs to her relations in 1890, 1893, 1894 (see next lot) and 1895. Relatives of Elinor Lupton (1886-1979) and Elizabeth ("Bessie") Lupton (1888-1977) sold these designs at auction in 2006.

A variant of this image is present in the Linder Collection (catalogue number 6.2) in which the upholstered chairs are green. In addition to other minor differences, the Linder Collection variant is merely signed with initials and dated 'H.B.P. Dec [18]93'. It was reproduced within Enid and Leslie Linder's The Art of Beatrix Potter (1972, p. 195).
