Catalogue Note

A collection with dates mostly ranging from 1848-1870. Many of these drawings were made at University College Hospital. One notes a liver gumma 'excised by Mr R.J. Godlee in 1899'. Rickman Godlee (1949-1925) was at the time Emeritus Professor of Clinical Surgery. He was a nephew of Joseph Lister and a pioneer of brain surgery. In 1884 he surgically removed a tumour of the brain. This illustration was executed in 1911 by the medical artist W. Thornton Shiells.
