Catalogue Note
Gozde Ilkin creates her work on fabric, canvas, paper and found objects. She embroiders her stories, either by hand or machine, on these surfaces with black, white or coloured threads. Through interventions in the texture on which she works, Ilkin completes her work with strings left unsown or a single layer of acrylic paint.
In Kiralik (For Rent), smoke emanates from an old-school Turkish police car with the emergency number 155 embroidered on this found table cloth. The police car has become a part of the cloth, the provincial flower pattern decorating the tires and the side of the vehicle, which represents order, safety and trust for this most fundamental public institution. The feminine colour tones and the pattern of the table cloth contradict the seriousness and masculine character of the police car; where the object finds a new identity via the texture of the fabric.
