Catalogue Note

Erdem Ergaz's paintings, diagrams and installations carry traces of diverse sciences such as geometry, physics, geology, religion and metaphysics. By alluding to the rigorous lines, schematised rationality and scientific universe of the present day, Ergaz focuses his compositions on the adaptation of the human being to this new era. Exploring the three-dimensional space within the fourth-dimension of time, he draws curvilinear planes with his subject centralised and isolated, usually suspended in air.

Despite selecting monochromatic tones, Ergaz creates extraordinary depth and perspective in The Long Sleep, illustrating an explosion involving a bed and a body as they float in this vast space. Ergaz questions the state of mind of a human being in hypnosis or a coma following an accident, such as the one illustrated here. Obsessed by the unconscious mind during hypnosis, coma, or the moments before a life ends, he tries to fathom the existence of 'the film strip' of emotions and memories that resonate as the body floats within this void of space and time.

Ergaz's painting skills and perfected technique reach a new level in the present work, labelling him as one of the most sophisticated contemporary artists of our time.
