Catalogue Note

Sencer Vardarman's TV-Scapes are surreal, neo-romantic compositions created by combining still images from recorded documentaries and television news. The "beautiful, catastrophic landscapes", as the artist calls them, are a critique of the tendency of reporters, scientists, and advertisers to alter imagery in order to publicly convey a controlled and calculated message. In Berlin Under Water, Vardarman transforms a scene from a popular cartoon, a documentary on underwater life and a view of Berlin from the post-Second World War by meticulously connecting these stills to build an imaginary civilization, which looks haunting yet magnificent.
