Catalogue Note

"Takano's world is, however, more secular, even uncomfortably racy at times. While these manga artists of the 70s established escapist environments and created their own sanctuaries, and by doing so created networks of salvation to rescue teenage girls from the "gravity" of social constraints and questions of self-existence, Takano, by inserting daydream-like landscapes into her paintings of the modern city, manages to perceive the ordinary through a different lens, and proposes the development of the imagination as a means of release from the very same "gravity."" - Akiko Miki ("Toward Eternity," Exh. Cat., Aya Takano, Paris, 2008)
