Condition

Colour: The colours in the catalogue illustration are fairly accurate, although the overall tonality is slightly cooler in the original. The catalogue illustration fails to convey fully the three-dimensionality of the nail relief and the rich surface texture of the kaolin apparent in the original. Condition: This work is in very good condition. There is some evidence of light wear, a few scattered rub marks, and some associated small media losses in places to the extreme edges. On close examination there are a few small losses to the tips of the nails, and some light oxidisation to the nails in places throughout. Characteristic surface cracking has occurred over time to a several bases where the nails puncture the kaolin surface. Some light discolouration and surface dirt has occurred over time to the surface. Underultraviolet light there are what appear to be thin retouchings in places to the vertical edges, and a few further spots of retouching elsewhere, in particular to the lower right quadrant. A professional treatment report is available upon request.

Catalogue Note

'When I use nails as elements of structure, I do not mean for them to be understood as nails. My aim is to establish a structured pattern of relationships with the aid of these elements in order to set vibrations in motion that disturb and irritate their geometric order...What is important to me is variability, which is capable of revealing the beauty of movement to us.'
