Catalogue Note

This symbolic work by Karam is about a journey that takes the viewer through memories carried by an elephant representing the past. The interpretation of the painting is dually represented in the title of Memories, War and Hope, and we see the story unfolding from right to left through the elephant and then we see the experience of war as a boy and girl flee devastation over a destroyed land where layers of the country's stories run deep. The characters then run towards the portion of the painting representing hope which is epitomised by the wild cat who carries high-rise buildings on his back from a levitating mountain of hope.
