Condition

There is an old fracture across the bear's chest running down through his left arm. There are further cracks around the bear's nose, on the back of his head and on the bear's proper right side, running length ways along the base. There is general wear to the surface and general surface dirt.

Catalogue Note

L'Ours assis, couché sur le dos et jouant avec son pied, est l'un des modèles les plus recherchés de Barye. Exposé au Salon dans les années 1830, l'oeuvre a été constamment retravaillée par Barye en y apportant des variantes avant d'être éditée en bronze.
