Condition

Good condition overall with minor surface dust and a few minor chips to the edge, consistent with age. The horizontal crack across the drapery is an old marble vein which has opened and been consolidated inside with a metal stick. It is not a traversing crack.

Catalogue Note

Crée par Carpeaux en 1863, le Rieur Napolitain est une adaptation du Jeune Pêcheur à la coquille (1857) sous forme de buste et sans coquille. Sujet suscitant un grand succès, Carpeaux décide de son vivant d'éditer le modèle. Cinq versions en marbre figuraient dans les ventes d'atelier de l'artiste en 1873 (n°11)  et 1874 (n°4), appartenant ensuite entre autres aux collections de S.L.Vaudoyer, F. Ochse et Edouard André (sa vente, 8 février 1887, n° 47).
