Condition

Overall the condition is very good. There is some minor old damage to the bottom of the big toe on the proper right foot. There is a small area of blemish on the proper right shin. There is general surface dirt. There are 4 small holes in the boy's hair, 2 above his proper right ear and 2 above his proper left eye, which appear to be original to the casting.

Catalogue Note

Au cours d'un voyage avec sa mère en 1873, le fils aîné de Carpeaux, Charles, se blessa l'épaule. Pour consoler le petit garçon de trois ans et lui faire oublier sa souffrance, elle lui offrit une colombe. Emu par cette scène charmante dans laquelle il voit une allégorie de l'Amour blessé, le sculpteur décide de l'immortaliser... en imposant de longues séances de pose au petit modèle.
Exposé au Salon de 1874 (n° 2728), le marbre original se trouve aujourd'hui au musée des Beaux-Arts de Valenciennes (Inv. no. S92-77), don du prince Stirbey (1921). Deux autres marbres, dont un se trouve au musée de Nancy (Inv. no. 1058), ont été exécutés du vivant de l'artiste. Le plâtre original fait partie des collections de la Glyptothèque de Copenhague (Inv. no. IN 2983).
