Catalogue Note

The use of necklaces strung with amulets has ancient precedent in India (Untracht 1997, p.126, fig.210). Their use on jewellery and other personal adornments came into widespread use in India in later years. A belt threaded with silver amulets from Kerala bears some resemblance to the present necklace (Untracht 1997, p.127, fig.215).

Armlets constructed in this way appear in both flexible and inflexible form. Flexible armlets of a similar appearance to the present example are recorded as coming from Rajasthan (Untracht 1997, p.251, nos.565-7).
