Catalogue Note

The vessel, known as an argha patra, is of a widely witnessed form intended for ritual purpose. The form evolves from traditional representations of the yoni, a cosmic symbol representing the female.

This form of vessel is filled with water and held in the hand during puja, the indent in the base used to place a finger for balance. The water is then poured onto the sculpture of a deity to bathe the god or goddess as an act of worship.

A Pahari miniature of the late 18th century in this sale, lot 70, depicts Parasurama offering a libation of blood, using the same form of vessel.
