Catalogue Note
The villages in the region of Bastar, in Madhya Pradesh, are renowned for their production of metalwork objects for a variety of purposes. Typically, the works employ a technique, called dhokra, in which metal strands are laid over a core, usually in parallel though sometimes crossed. In contrast, works made by the Kutia Kondh in Orissa, use a tight-fitting web of wire mesh as displayed on the group of hens in this lot. The Orissan technique tends toward a more simplified effect but this reductive approach can lead to a more essential result.
