Catalogue Note

The two items in this lot are as follows:

A: A moonlit landscape with water, 19th century
B: The fort of Chunar Ghur on the Ganges, circa 1825-1829. Inscribed "A view of 'The Fort of Chunar Ghur' on the right Bank of the Ganges. I O'Bri/ 87th"

The fort at Chunar Ghur was a popular subject during the 19th century. Artists including William Hodges, Thomas and William Daniell, George Chinnery and Sita Ram have all depicted the fort. The end of the inscription of item B - "I O'Bri/87th" is probably short for "I O'Brien of the 87th Irish Regiment of Foot",  which was stationed in India from 1825 to 1829. No doubt O'Brien was the amateur artist responsible for this work.
