Catalogue Note
This is a very intense portrait, based on a photograph, in which the steely, rather suspicious look of the sitter was no doubt prompted by his wariness of the camera and photographer. Cary Welch suggested that this image represented a paraplegic veteran from the Mutiny, which is certainly possible, although there were many other ways a warrior could loose his legs on and off the battlefield in late 19th century India.
