Catalogue Note
The feathery floral forms employed in the decoration of this piece are distinctive and redolent of those employed in miniature illumination and painting from this period in the Deccan. The flowers are reminiscent of those depicted in a mid-seventeenth century Bijapuri painting thought to be by Haidar Ali or Ibrahim Khan (Zebrowski 1983, p.133, no.101). Similar designs also feature on contemporary architectural decoration, such as the painted designs on the mihrab of the Jami Mosque in Bijapur of 1636 (Michell & Zebrowski 1999, p.142, no.106).
