Description

  • Bool, ink and opaque watercolour on paper
Arabic manuscript on paper, 212 leaves plus 2 flyleaves, 18 lines to the page writen in neat Naskh script in black ink, verses separated by gold florets, surah headings in gold reserved against a blue-ground cartouche filled with scrolling vines, within rectangular foliate panels, margins ruled in gold, marginal devices comprising blue cartouches emanating floral scrolls, catchwords, 2 opening double page frontispieces in colours and gold, with polychrome flowers and a punched ground, morocco binding with gilt-stamped medallions, cornerpieces and border cartouches filled with interlacing vegetation

Condition

In good overall condition, one or two loose pages, gold bright and ink bold, some wear to binding, as viewed.

Catalogue Note

This Qur'an is the hundred and thirty-second Qur'an copied by Muhammad 'Ali bin Muhammad Sadiq al-Isfahani. His recorded work is dated between 1192 AH/1778-9 ADand 1235 AH/1819-20 AD, with his hundred and fourteenth Qur'an in a private collection in Tehran. Two of his recorded works are in the Gulistan Palace Library in Tehran and three were sold at Sotheby's 22 April, 1980, lot 274; April 1981, lot 352 and June 1985, lot 49.
