A Kashan `Mohtashem' Carpet, Central Persia

Description

  • Approximately 500 by 327cm; 16ft. 5in., 10ft. 8in.
  • Height 199 in; width 130 in
with delicate cream coloured calligraphic inscriptions at both ends of the carpet within the red ground of the the main field,  in horizontal lines across the width between the small pendant drops and the main blue pole medallion; the inscriptions are in repeat in positive and negative, and include `farmayesh-e aqa mohammad .....' (Commissioned by Aqa Muhammad .....) and the words `qali andakht' (He spread the carpet); `gol' (flower) and `shadi bad' (May there be joy)



 

Condition

Pile upper end of carpet is approximately 5mm deep. Slight oxidation to pale blue in centre of medallion, and pile down to foundation in a very small area. Small amount of local wear in the lower quarter section of the red medallion, including oxidation. Some oxidation to the dark blue in pendant of central medallion. There is a 4cm. long split in the blue ground, top right of pole medallion. Old horizontal repair lower right corner of border. Some small tension lines of wear in blue ground. Original magenta silk side cords with losses. Original flat woven end finishes lower end, with majority of fringe rewoven. Upper end fringe lacking, overlocked with blanket stitch. The delicate cream coloured inscriptions are within the red ground at both ends of the carpet, in horizontal lines across the width between the small pendant drops and the main blue pole medallion. Overall in very good condition. Typical 'Mohtashem' quality dense kurkwool, lovely quality. EMBARGO ON IMPORTATION OF PERSIAN/IRANIAN WORKS OF ART TO THE USA.
