Description

the curved watered steel blade with flat back edge and gold-overlay inscription at the forte and along both faces of the blade, the Mughal jade hilt of pistol-grip form and silver-mounted, with scroll-form silver quillons all set with coloured gemstones, the silver scabbard chased and engraved with foliate scrolls and decorated en suite to the hilt with jewel-encrusted mounts

On the blade, on one side: Qur'an, chapters LXI (al-Saff) part of verse 13 and XXVII (al-Naml), verse 30.

On the other side: An Arabic couplet attributed to Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi'i (d. 204/820), with the date at the end as: 'Year 1105 (1693-4)'.

In the cartouches near the hilt, a quatrain in Turkish, including the name 'al-Hajj 'Ali Pasha'i-zada, the treasurer (khazinadar)'
