carved in the form of a crouching gazelle, painted ivory in black, with gold-painted horns, a striped red collar, and natural shaping of the eyes and mouth, resting on four bent legs

In overall good condition, with few minor spots of discoloration, as viewed.

Catalogue Note
Zoomorphic powder flasks that feature the full form of a single animal are rare, the more common form being that of composite animals, perhaps in the course of a chase. A further single-animal flask was exhibited in the Treasures of Islam exhibition at the Musee d'Art et d'Histoire, Geneva, in 1985 (see Geneva 1985, p.313).
