Literature
For comprehensive discussion on the development of the Kashmir shawl and illustrations, see Frank Ames, Kashmir Shawls, 1988. For a similar design of shawl, dated 1830, Sikh, with a regular design of repeated motifs (not boteh but flowerheads) along vertical axis, with the same use of the boteh and arched design within the medallion and corner spandrels see Ames, opcit. plate 202, pg. 298.
Condition
Narrow ivory guard border with diamonds on side borders has been trimmed off along each outer edge; raw edge of pashmina on each side (stitched by hand down to backing to support) outer dark green lozenge guard border at top and bottom turned under and stitched into backing, approximately half of guard visible. Small darns and splits in vertical outer guards, the longest about 3cm long (perhaps a dozen small splits and darns in total) 5cm split in field with some fraying to the edges; on left hand side adjacent to side border, just above the central horizontal axis. Small pin holes and darns/strengthening in upper half of medallion, small scattered split and pin holes through field - nothing out of the ordinary for the age. Wonderful quality and colour.
